Getting Started with AI

What do students need to know about using AI at Penn State?

Expectations about responsible AI use can vary by course and context.

If you’re a student, we recommend you review these three considerations to guide your use of AI at Penn State:

University and Course Policies

There is no university-wide policy about AI use at Penn State. Policies about AI use are up to individual instructors and may vary from course to course. If you’re unsure about whether AI use is permitted in your course, we recommend checking your syllabus or asking your instructor.

Academic Integrity

Intentional or unintentional, the use of generative AI tools in academic settings to generate student work can violate academic integrity. If you’re unsure, always follow the guidance given by your instructor and in your syllabus.

Access to Generative AI

When AI use is appropriate, Penn State students can access Microsoft Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection for free (when logged in with PSU credentials). Microsoft doesn’t use your data to train AI, but you should not enter personal or sensitive data into Copilot.
